'John [John Florence] is really bad at giving skate lessons'

Professional surfer John John Florence enjoying a break from competition while in Australia; screen grab from video
In professional-surfing jargon, a “lay day” is when a surf contest is called off for the day due to less-than-ideal conditions. For surfers on the ASP World Championship Tour, it’s a welcome respite from the stress of competition. That said, you never really know when it’s going to be a lay day, so when one is called by the contest director early in the morning, the first thing pro surfers do is ask each other, “What are we going to do today?”
Back in the day, the boys would use the downtime to simply go on a 24-hour party bender, but alas, times have changed and professional surfing has gotten, well, more professional. Here’s a fun look at what the Hurley surf team got into during a 24-hour lay day while in Australia for the recently completed Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. You could almost guess the activities before watching: The girls (Lakey Peterson and Carissa Moore) go clothes shopping, the men (Michel Bourez, Miguel Pupo, Brett Simpson, and friend) buy a bunch of meat and make a hearty meal, and John John Florence tears up the local skatepark, offering up skate lessons to a hot blonde. (Spoiler alert: he’s a lousy skate coach.)
Lay days: Just another reason to be jealous of the lifestyle of professional surfers.
